Is a bison and a buffalo the same animal.?

Bison is the correct term for the american bison in the US. There is also a european bison (the wisent). Buffalo is a group of animals that include many cattle-like mammals throughout asia and africa including the african caped buffalo, the water buffalo and others. They are not the same animal.
