Who thinks Jeter sucks as captain?
No one is perfect, but Jeter is a fine captain. He's a hall of fame talent, works hard, sets the tone of play every day, never takes a play off, never loses his cool no matter how big the stakes. That play when he sold out his body, diving into foul territory for a ball to get a big win against the Sox, bloodying up his superstar looks, that's how Jeter leads. He is not a spectacular player like Arod, but Jeter almost always makes the right play, his baseball smarts are unquestioned. I'm not talking about errors, I'm talking about mental mistakes, and Jeter makes them less than any player I've ever seen. Sure, Jeter is not the rah rah, ultra-emotional type of leader, he IS the type that leads by example. I don't know for sure what his communication skills are, but he seems to get along with everyone, and his teammates clearly look to him as the leader. That is the surest sign of his leadership skills. He didn't need to step aside for Arod. There was no guarantee that would make the team better, and might have made the team worse. It's totally unfair to compare that to Pedro and Santana's situation. Pedro was talking about who is #1 and who would start Opening Day. But really, what difference does it make who's #1 and who's #1A, they are both going to pitch every fifth day. It doesn't affect his preparation, doesn't change anything that he is already doing. Comparing that to the issue of changing your position as an everyday player is comparing apples and oranges. Another thing is, not only does Jeter not make mistakes on the field, he doesn't make them off the field. He doesn't bring any negative attention to the team, even though he gets stalked by the paparazzi 24/7. You can't ask for more than that from your captain.
